About the Centre/Service At Queens Park, we believe that kindergarten is the beginning of the formal education process, a stepping- stone towards a positive start to life learning. We aim to provide a safe, welcoming and quality program, stimulating growth and development through partnerships with families and children. Using sustained shared thinking and intentional teaching in a play -based program we strive to achieve the best learning environment and experiences for all pre-school aged children. In keeping with the Victorian governments vision, we base ourselves on the Victorian Early Years Learning and Development Framework (VEYLF) a program that is reflected in Victorian Primary Schools. The VEYLF covers five outcomes for children’s learning experiences; Identity, Environment, Wellbeing, Learning and Communication. We use these principles when planning, implementing and evaluating our programs for our children. At QP we understand that children guide their own learning and that programs should reflect their interests. Creativity, communication and collaboration are all combined to promote an effective pedagogic teaching strategy. Educators work closely with children, on their level and by ingraining themselves in the children’s interests. A Play based program is used to foster children’s development, as we know that through play children are learning valuable life skills. Successful learning does not happen through rote learning processes, but through a combination of intentional teaching, child directed interests, evaluation and extended experiences. Within the play- based program children are allowed to be children whilst experiencing a sense of safety, security and respect from adults and peers. Intentional teaching supports these play experiences and allows for them to remain open ended, giving children the best opportunity to develop their own learning and understanding. Through our play -based curriculum children are developing many skills: written and spoken word, counting and number recognition, problem solving abilities, social and emotional development, confidence and resilience. Family participation and involvement with children’s planning, learning and development is also a key component of our philosophy. Using different observation and evaluation techniques, open communication and collaboration we work closely with families to achieve the best learning outcomes for their children. Children are always encouraged to share ideas, ask questions and try new things whilst educators provide a secure balance of structure and limitations. We foster children’s independence and strive to make sure every child feels included, has a ‘voice’, is comfortable, happy and feels successful within their kindergarten environment.
