Background on AITSL’s Early Childhood and the Teacher Standards project
Registration requirements for teachers in early childhood non-school settings are not consistent across Australia. In addition to confirming qualifications and suitability requirements, registration within a profession also includes an assessment of practice against standards, which helps in a number of areas, including defining career pathways, identifying professional learning, allowing for constructive feedback and development, and raising public confidence and esteem for the profession.
Four jurisdictions (VIC, NSW, WA and SA) currently require teachers in early childhood non-school settings to register to teach and use the Teacher Standards as the basis for codifying the expected practice of those teachers. They use a range of tools to do this, such as:
- Minor wording changes to the Teacher Standards to better reflect ECEC settings
- Evidence guides to support demonstration of the Teacher Standards in ECEC settings
- Support to access mentors external to the setting
AITSL’s project aims to harness experiences, policies and resources to support the implementation of ECT registration in all non-school settings. In consultation with the Australian Children’s Education & Care Quality Authority (ACECQA) and key stakeholders, AITSL will adapt and/or develop draft policy materials and advice to support implementation of the Teacher Standards for teachers working in non-school early childhood settings.
AITSL would like to seek your advice on existing registration materials and their implementation to help us understand strengths, weaknesses, and gaps in these materials. It is important that these materials ‘speak to’ teachers working in early childhood and accommodate the diverse settings in which they operate. We would also like to gain your insights into potential solutions to support teachers in early childhood to access Highly Accomplished and Lead teacher (HALT) certification.
