16 Jun$9 billion expansion of early childhood education
ELAA welcomes this morning’s announcement by the Andrew’s Government of a transformational investment in early childhood education and care.
Key elements of the announcement include:
- free 3 and 4 year old kindergarten from 2023
- a universal, 30 hour a week 4-year-old kindergarten program called ‘Pre-prep’ to be developed over the next decade
- investment in 50 new government run integrated early childhood education and care centres.
This announcement comes off the back of several years of advocacy on the importance of all children having access to kindergarten, and a weight of evidence on the positive impact of additional hours of early childhood education in improving life outcomes for vulnerable children.
ELAA has written to the Premier and Minister for Early Childhood Education welcoming the announcement, and will be actively engaged in the planning and rollout of the initiative. We will consult and engage with members as more information becomes available.
