30 NovELAA congratulates the incoming Andrews government in Victoria

Posted on 30 Nov 2022

ELAA would like to congratulate the Andrews Labor government on its state election win last week. The commitment this government has made to Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) offers a hopeful future for Victoria’s ECEC sector.

ELAA has been working with the state government on to where the ECEC sector needs improvement and where it lacks sufficient support. With the election now over, ELAA will be involved in  further consultations with sector representatives and the Department of Education and Training (Vic DET) to ensure the roll-out of Free Kinder and scale up to 30 hours of Pre-Prep are successful and beneficial to the sector. There will be further information on this announced in the future, but we welcome the voices of our membership to continue to inform us on where our Advocacy at should be directed.

The Andrews Labor Government have made considerable financial commitments to the sector. Some of these include:

  • opening 50 government-run early childhood centres in areas of high need
  • introducing a year of Pre-Prep learning, with four-year-old kinder transitioning to universal pre-prep from 2032
  • kinder will be made free from 2023
  • establish a workforce package to tackle skills shortages
  • roll out 30 hours of pre-prep across the state
  • $159 million into developing the workforce to cater to these changes.
