26 AprTerm 1 pulse check survey

Posted on 26 Apr 2023

Thanks to all ELAA members who completed our Term 1 Pulse Check survey. We were pleased to hear the responses of 86 members who expressed a breadth of concerns, positive developments, and capacity for improvements from the last Term and for the following year. The surveys act as great tool for our advocacy team and motivates us for the year ahead.

Most providers offer funded kindergarten services for both 3 and 4-year-olds. Only nine organisations offered out-of-school hours care. However, 41% reported that they offer extended hours in addition to the government funded hours.

Sixty three percent of respondents reported minimal change in enrolments for 2023, seeing only slightly higher of slightly lower enrolments compared to this time last year. Some members indicated additional hours supported by the Child Care Subsidy would benefit their enrolments.

We asked service providers if they have been required to close their service at any point in Term 1. Twelve service providers communicated temporary closures of services. Reasoning ranged from insufficient staff, to weather and maintenance issues. It should be noted that at least seven responded that whilst they have not experienced any closures yet, insufficient staff has created increased stress on their service with staff working extra hours and a constant need of casual/relief staff.

Finally, the report asked members which issues/ topics they would most like ELAA to focus our advocacy on in 2023. Members would like to see ELAA’s advocacy support services to cater to disadvantaged children and families. Many reported issues with KIS applications, for example, late KIS applications due to late enrolments; rooms with children needing high level inclusion support in a room without additional aid, creating both safety and educational concerns.

In terms of things ELAA could do, many stated that more clarity and frameworks around how to prepare for 30-hour pre-prep rollout would significantly ease tension in the sector.

We thank you for the contributions and look forward to continuing our advocacy in Term 2 with this in mind. Just a reminder that Pulse Check Surveys are sent out at the end of every term to all ELAA members and any input is greatly appreciated.
