Posted on 26 Mar 2025

Keeping children safe in early childhood education and care (ECEC) services is a top priority for parents. Lisa Bryant, an ECEC advocate and consultant, shared with us key advice on how parents can ensure this safety. In addition to her ECEC advocacy and consultancy, Lisa is a researcher, journalist, and regular opinion writer whose work has been published by The Guardian, the Sydney Morning Herald, and the ABC.

Lisa recommends parents:

  • Check who owns the service
  • Examine staff-to-child ratios
  • Ask about staff turnover
  • Look into staff qualifications
  • Assess the use of casual staff
  • Trust your instincts
  • Do not be fooled by appearances
  • Check the service’s rating
  • Build relationships with educators
  • Advocate for change
  • Teach your child the correct names for body parts
  • Believe your child

Lisa advises parents not to:

  • Demand constant updates and pictures
  • Panic

Above all, Lisa advises parents stay informed, ask questions and advocate for change.
