Check out our training options to support your service’s Committee of Management in 2023

The committee of management of an early childhood service plays a pivotal role in managing the service, staff and supporting families to provide a quality education and care service to children.  

As the approved provided, the responsibilities that the committee of management cannot be taken lightly and ELAA, in partnership with the Victorian Department of Education (DE) are here to support you to understand what they are and how to carry it out.  

ELAA’s governance training sessions provide the members within these committees to understand their role and responsibilities in light of legislation and regulations. The sessions provide participants real life examples of how this needs to be enacted in the early childhood service. These live webinars provide the added opportunity to ask questions and network with fellow committee members.  

If you are new to the committee, these sessions give you a good insight into being a member and what that entails. If you have been on the committee for a period of time, these sessions will allow you to gain more ideas, get up-to-date information and allow you to share your experiences.

Session Information

Starting From the Beginning: Governance Information

A comprehensive introduction to the roles and responsibilities of committees of management of early childhood services.

Content: An introduction to the roles and responsibilities of committees, including brief consideration of joining an EYM.
We will explore your role as: 

  • an Incorporated Association committee 
  • an approved provider and an early childhood funded service provider 
  • an employer of staff in an early childhood service 
  • a manager of an early childhood service. 

Who should attend: All members of the committee of management
Date and Time: Tuesday, 28 February 2023, 7:00pm – 8:30pm

Financial Management

Are you the treasurer on the committee of management or a member of the finance sub-committee of your early childhood service? Or are you a bookkeeper or business manager with the responsibility of supporting your approved provider to manage the services finances? This role comes with great responsibility and ELAA, in partnership with DE welcomes you to attend our training session – Financial management – to get a better understanding of what healthy financial management looks like.  

Content: This live webinar will cover the following topics:

  • the legal framework of an incorporated association
  • role of the Treasurer and finance subcommittee
  • financial management of an early childhood service 
  • planning for the future including preparing the budget.

Who should attend: Treasurer, President, Vice-President, Secretary, Finance subcommittee

Employee Management & Development Resource Webinar 

If you are involved in the performance review and appraisal process at your early childhood service, this webinar is for you. ELAA, in partnership with The Victorian Department of Education have updated the Employee Management and Development Resource (EM&D). This webinar will support you with using this valuable resource.  

Content: The 1.5hour session will discuss the concept of the EM&D, the responsibilities of the employer and employee as well as how to use the attached tools. This will be an interactive session with an opportunity for questions to be responded to live.  

Who should attend: Anyone who has a role in Employee Management, including staff.

Ending the year on a high: Planning your AGM and successful handover 

ELAA’s ‘Ending The Year On a High’: Planning your AGM and Successful Handover governance training will provide you with an understanding of the importance of the AGM and practical tips on how to plan for this event including recruitment and what to include on the agenda. This training will also support committees preparing for the handover, which is vital in ensuring that the new committee are prepared to take on their new roles.   

Content: This free session will cover: 

  • Effective Annual General Meetings (AGM):
    – constitutional requirements
    – committee recruitment
    – planning the meeting
    – agenda and reports
    – committee elections
    – strategies to encourage attendance 
  • The handover process:
    – preparation
    – essential information to be passed on
    – the meeting 

Who should attend: Secretary, Treasurer, President, Vice-President, anyone who has a role in AGM preparation.
Date and Time: Tuesday 18 July 2023 7:00pm – 8:30pm

Self-paced online modules 

We understand how busy volunteer committee members can be, so in addition to live webinars, we have developed these self-paced online modules. These cover similar content to the live webinars and can be completed where and when it suits you.  

We highly recommend that links to these sessions are provided to all committee members. Members should be encouraged to view all the modules as each of them provide valuable information that will relate to the whole committee and address the responsibilities that come along with the role.  

Your committee members can complete training where and when it suits them.
