26 AprImportance of up-to-date policies and procedures in Early Childhood Education and Care

Posted on 26 Apr 2023

In early childhood education and care, policies and procedures play a critical role in ensuring the safety and well-being of children. From emergency procedures to health and hygiene policies, having up-to-date guidelines in place is essential for maintaining a high standard of care.

One of the primary benefits of having up-to-date policies and procedures is that it helps to ensure that everyone involved in caring for children is on the same page. This includes staff, parents, and even children themselves. When everyone knows what is expected of them, it helps to create a more cohesive and organized environment.

Having clear policies and procedures can help to minimise risk and liability. In the event of an accident or incident, having documented procedures in place can help to demonstrate that the appropriate steps were taken to prevent and respond to the situation.

In the current climate of increased health and safety concerns, it is more important than ever to have up-to-date policies and procedures in place. From COVID-19 protocols to emergency preparedness plans, having clear guidelines can help to mitigate risk and provide peace of mind for families and staff alike.

Up-to-date policies and procedures demonstrate a commitment to ongoing improvement and best practices. It shows that an organisation is constantly striving to improve and evolve, which can help to attract and retain staff.

ELAA is here to help. Our PolicyWorks Catalogue Subscription provides templates to assist early childhood education and care services in developing and updating policies to meet legislative, regulatory and funding requirements. The PolicyWorks Catalogue contains a template of each of the policies mandated by the Education and Care Services National Regulation 168. It also contains templates of additional evidence-based policies ELAA considers essential to deliver quality early childhood education and care. We have also included the new Child Safe Standards updates that came into effect in July 2022.

Our PolicyWorks Catalogue templates include:

  • greater use of bullets and tables for easier reading
  • clearer and more consistent information
  • colour coded section icons for quick visual scanning
  • colour coded links to internal and external content
  • easily editable templates so you can customise each policy to your service.

This year we have introduced a three-year review schedule. Each month you will receive an email to advise you which policies are currently under review and a follow up email informing you of any changes. This new model will support members with their policy review cycle, making it easier and more sustainable.

All updates are recorded in the Table of Updates on the ELAA website.
