Strategies and practices to support children with a disability

Yooralla presents a practical three-part workshop around supporting children with a disability. Participants will have the opportunity to engage in discussion as well as learn strategies and practices to support inclusion in the program and classroom.

The day will include the following:

  1. Is it sensory or behaviour?

An information session to helping early childhood professionals understand the impact that sensory processing may have on a child’s behaviour i.e. movement seeking, task avoidance, non-compliance, attention and concentration difficulties.

  1. Promoting positive behaviour

This session will explore aspects of difficult behaviours, both overt and passive. Discussions will include looking at ways to measure the frequency and duration, what happens before the behaviour, replacing difficult behaviour, developing planned routines.

  1. Using visual aids

This session provides information on how visual aids can help all children communicate and participate more effectively in a range of activities e.g. understanding the routine, following adult direction, transitions.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER

Working for a world where people with disability are equal citizens, Yooralla have been working with children with developmental delays and disability for almost 100 years. Yooralla employs over 2000 people across Victoria, supporting children, young people and adults with disability to live the life they choose. As such, they have developed resources and professional learning workshops that inform early years educators in taking a family-centred approach within services which are linked to the EYLF and the VEYLDF.
