20 NovELAA CEO Update 20 November 2019

Posted on 20 Nov 2019

I wanted to reflect on the ELAA AGM which was held at Collingwood Town Hall last Thursday evening.  It was so pleasing to see ELAA members coming together to discuss sector issues and compare notes in a relaxed environment (with some great live Jazz in the background).

I was impressed by the perspectives offered by Deloitte Partner, Luci Palaghia, and Associate Director, Rosie Bridge, on the financial and policy trends that will shape our sector over the next five to ten years. It was also a privilege to celebrate the achievements of our McArthur Early Childhood Volunteer of the Year finalists, especially Liz Jowett from Chelsea Kindergarten who was announced 2019 Volunteer of the Year.

On the night, long-serving ELAA Board member, Jo Guerts, was acknowledged for her fantastic contribution to ELAA and the early years sector by being made an ELAA Life Member. Jo completed her service on the ELAA Board as of last Thursday after nine years of impeccable service, including three years as Board President. I would like to thank Jo for her great leadership and commitment to early learning and I have no doubt she will remain a great friend and trusted voice for ELAA.

On a different matter, it was fantastic to see Monday’s announcement by Victorian Education Minister, James Merlino, of $3.41 million (over four years) in additional funding to support Early Years Management organisations to cover the increased costs of providing kindergarten to all three-year-olds. EYMs provide just over a third of all kindergarten services in Victoria and, as medium to large organisations, have their own specific challenges. It’s great to see the Victorian Government taking steps toward addressing some of the issues that ELAA outlined in its 2019 submission Early Years Management – Achieving a sustainable service system.

On behalf of our members, I’d like to welcome Grant Boyd as ELAAs new President. Grant is currently CEO of Bethany Community Services and has a wealth of experience across the community and early childhood sectors.  At a time of significant change in the sector, Grant’s experience will play a significant role in ELAA successfully navigating the change journey.

Wishing you all a fantastic week.
