Koorie Kids Shine promotes the benefits of 15 hours per week of free kindergarten for three- and four-year-old Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children. Aboriginal families provide a strong foundation for their children’s early learning and development, while kindergarten providers work hard to create culturally safe places for Aboriginal children and families, such as including Aboriginal perspectives in the learning curriculum and environment.
Significant improvements in Aboriginal participation in kindergarten have been achieved because of sustained, collaborative work between multiple partners and stakeholders. Sustained effort is required to maintain these gains as well as reaching out to families who might still be missing out.
