Read for information and resources on maintaining contact and engaging with families who have elected not to attend during the pandemic.

Funded kindergarten and early childhood services are being provided at no cost to Victorian families. Whilst many families will take up this opportunity for their children to continue that important direct connection with their friends and educators, other children who may be physically vulnerable to the virus or whose parents are anxious may choose not to attend.

Service providers play a critical role in maintaining a connection to children and families. Making contact with families who are uncertain about whether their children should return or who have decided not to come is an important first step. Educators can help families understand what measures the service has put in place to manage risks of transmission of coronavirus (COVID-19).

The expectation from the Department of Education and Training (DET) is that services make reasonable efforts (where possible and in line with their particular circumstances) to support home learning. Educators routinely support parents with home learning with suggestions of activities to extend and develop children’s skills and this period creates a unique opportunity to expand that repertoire.

  • Information about home learning resources for children aged three to five is available on the Victorian DET Learning from Home
  • The webpage will continue to be updated in the coming weeks with additional resources, so be sure to check back regularly.
  • High quality activities for early learners are also available on the FUSE website. The Raising Children parenting website also has a range of activities for parents to support the play and development of babies, toddlers and pre-schoolers.

If your organisation has documented how it is going about remote learning and is willing to share this information to help other members, please email Lisa Minchin, Advocacy and Grants Lead lminchin@elaa.org.au .

Maintaining continuity of relationships and fostering learning will help children and families return when restrictions are removed.
